It all started in 1953 when Ferril, at age 14, landed his first job with a small grocer in Plant City, FL. He worked hard after school and during summer breaks doing the things that a smart, young high school student who wanted to get ahead would do if they were lucky enough to have a job in a grocery store: stocking, sweeping, bagging, sweeping, taking out the garbage, sweeping, cleaning up on Isle 3, more sweeping…you get the idea!
In 1957, at the age of 17, Ferril graduated from High School and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served with the Military Police for a combined total of 4 years active duty and active Reserve.
Shortly after Ferril left Lykes, he joined with a long-time acquaintance and began operating a small, specialized bacon slicing plant that specialized in the highest quality Danish pork belly slicing. This venture was a successful first attempt at owning his own business and led to the development of MH Foods, Inc. in 1999.
